Thread Veins: Why Winter Is an Ideal Time for Microsclerotherapy
Dreaming of smoother, clearer-looking legs next summer? Winter is an excellent time to start planning your thread vein treatment.
Thread veins often require more than one treatment session, and visible improvement develops gradually. Starting during the colder months allows time for treatment, recovery and follow-up appointments before summer.
Winter also makes some aspects of aftercare easier, particularly wearing compression stockings and protecting treated skin from strong sunlight.
At PHP Aesthetic-Wellness, 22 Harley Street, London, we offer doctor-led microsclerotherapy with individual assessment and treatment planning.
What are thread veins?
Thread veins, also known as spider veins or telangiectasias, are tiny, widened blood vessels visible beneath the surface of the skin.
They usually appear as fine red, blue or purple lines, sometimes forming small webs or clusters. They are particularly common on the thighs, behind the knees and around the ankles.
Thread veins are usually harmless, although many people choose treatment because they are unhappy with their appearance. They can become more noticeable with age and may be associated with family history, pregnancy and hormonal changes.
Thread veins are different from varicose veins
Varicose veins are generally larger, sometimes raised or bulging, and may be associated with problems affecting blood flow through the leg veins.
If you have visible varicose veins, leg swelling, discomfort or skin changes, further vascular assessment may be necessary before cosmetic treatment.

How does microsclerotherapy work?
Microsclerotherapy is an established treatment for small thread veins on the legs.
A trained practitioner uses a very fine needle to inject a sclerosant solution directly into the affected vein. The solution causes a controlled reaction within the vein, encouraging its walls to close. Over time, the treated vein becomes less visible as the body gradually breaks it down.
Blood continues to circulate through other healthy veins.
What to expect
Treatment time: approximately 60 minutes per session at PHP Aesthetic-Wellness.
Comfort: you may experience a brief stinging or burning sensation during individual injections. Most patients tolerate treatment without local anaesthetic.
Recovery: most patients can walk and return to ordinary daily activities shortly afterwards.
Aftercare: compression stockings may be recommended, together with temporary restrictions on strenuous exercise, heat exposure and sun exposure.
The number of sessions required depends on the extent of the thread veins, their size and your individual response to treatment.

Why is winter an ideal time for microsclerotherapy?
1. More time for visible improvement
Microsclerotherapy results are gradual. Some veins may begin to fade within a few weeks, but the full improvement can take several months. Occasionally, treated veins initially appear darker or more noticeable before they improve.
Many patients need two or more sessions, depending on the number and size of the veins being treated. Starting in winter allows time for the treatment course and follow-up appointments before the warmer months.
Planning ahead is important because complete clearance cannot be guaranteed.
2. Easier protection from sunlight
After microsclerotherapy, treated skin can be more vulnerable to pigmentation changes. Exposure to strong sunlight may increase the likelihood of brown marks developing around treated veins.
Patients are commonly advised to protect treated areas from direct sunlight for approximately four weeks, although the exact advice depends on the procedure and their practitioner’s instructions. During winter, keeping the legs covered is generally easier.
3. Compression stockings are more comfortable
Compression stockings are commonly recommended following microsclerotherapy. They apply gentle pressure to the treated areas and may help improve treatment outcomes.
Depending on the clinical protocol, compression may be recommended for approximately one to three weeks. Wearing compression hosiery beneath trousers or winter clothing is often more comfortable and discreet than during hot summer weather.
4. Easier recovery planning
Following treatment, patients may be advised to avoid hot baths, saunas, sunbeds and strenuous exercise for a period of time. Walking and normal daily movement are generally encouraged.
Winter can be a convenient time to schedule treatment around holidays, outdoor activities and periods of prolonged sun exposure. However, microsclerotherapy can be performed at other times of the year when suitable aftercare arrangements are possible.

What happens at PHP Aesthetic-Wellness?
1. Initial assessment
Your doctor will assess the visible thread veins, review your medical history and discuss your concerns. The assessment will also consider whether there are signs of underlying venous disease.
Where necessary, further investigation, such as duplex ultrasound, or referral to a vascular specialist may be recommended.
2. Personalised treatment plan
Your doctor will explain the proposed treatment, expected results, potential risks and aftercare. You will also receive information about the likely number of sessions and associated costs before proceeding.
3. Microsclerotherapy treatment
The sclerosant is carefully injected into suitable thread veins using a fine needle. Where appropriate, associated small feeding veins may also be assessed and treated. The treatment is tailored to the location, size and distribution of your veins.
4. Follow-up and review
Your progress will be reviewed after an appropriate interval. Further treatment may be recommended if some veins remain visible or additional areas need attention.
Our approach is based on careful assessment, realistic expectations and patient safety.
Is microsclerotherapy suitable for everyone?
Microsclerotherapy is suitable for many adults with small thread veins on their legs, but it is not appropriate for every patient.
You should tell your doctor if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- have a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood-clotting disorders;
- have varicose veins, leg swelling or suspected circulation problems;
- take anticoagulant or other medication that may affect treatment;
- have significant peripheral arterial disease or certain other medical conditions;
- have previously experienced an allergic reaction to a sclerosant;
- may be unable to walk regularly or follow the recommended compression aftercare.
Your doctor will assess the risks and explain whether microsclerotherapy, another treatment or further investigation is most appropriate.

Frequently asked questions
Will my thread veins come back?
Successful treatment closes the targeted veins, but it does not prevent new thread veins from developing. Some veins may not respond completely, and further sessions may be necessary.
New thread veins can develop over time, particularly in people with an underlying tendency to form them.
How many sessions will I need?
Many patients need more than one session. A course of approximately two to four sessions may be discussed, but this is not a fixed requirement. Some patients need fewer treatments, while others need more.
Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan following your assessment.
How long before I see results?
Some improvement may become visible within several weeks. However, the main benefit may take around three months to become apparent, with further improvement possible afterwards.
Results vary, and complete clearance is not guaranteed.
Are there any side effects?
Common temporary effects include:
- redness, bruising and mild swelling;
- tenderness or itching around injection sites;
- temporary darkening of treated veins;
- brown pigmentation that may take several months to fade;
- occasionally, the appearance of very fine new vessels, known as matting.
Less common but potentially serious complications include skin damage, allergic reactions and blood clots.
If you develop significant calf pain or swelling after treatment, seek prompt medical assessment. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency medical attention.
Your doctor will discuss the relevant risks before treatment.
How much does microsclerotherapy cost?
At PHP Aesthetic-Wellness, microsclerotherapy starts from £300 per session. Your doctor will assess the veins and explain the proposed treatment plan and expected costs before you proceed.
